Hello folks – the following Press Release is headed out today regarding a proposed new Rental Property bylaw. It’s an issue that’s gained widespread attention over the last few years, and something that Council wants to get right the first time. If you have feedback to offer, please hit up the survey here (it’s also linked in the release below).
April 5, 2018 – Residents are encouraged to share their opinions on the City’s proposed licencing by-law for rental properties.
The City’s rental housing licencing by-law would require property owners of rental dwellings with four units or less to obtain a rental licence. The licencing program will increase safety for tenants living in rental units and ensure compliance with applicable codes and by-laws by requiring rental properties to submit detailed plans for parking, fire safety, waste removal and property management. The by-law cannot regulate or address tenant behaviour.
“It’s important we hear from residents from across the city as the feedback we receive will help shape the final by-law,” said Margaret Josipovic, Project Expeditor with the City. “The rental housing by-law will apply to the entire city, not just a few sections, which is why it’s important we hear from as many residents, landlords and tenants as possible.”
A public open house is planned for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17 at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre in Robertson Theatre. The open house will be a drop-in format where residents can meet with City staff from various departments to discuss the draft by-law and provide feedback.
An online survey is available at www.stcatharines.ca/RentalSurvey for those unable to attend the open house. City staff will also host pop-up displays at City-owned facilities throughout April and May to gather feedback from the community. Public consultations will last until the middle of May.
The entire draft rental housing licencing by-law can be read at www.stcatharines.ca/RentalByLaw
City staff plan to bring the final rental housing licencing by-law to City Council on June 25, 2018.
